Hearty congratulations to Maria who joins as the n Hearty congratulations to Maria who joins as the newest member. In her own words …. “María Laura Ortiz Chiavetta is an Argentine wine strategist, writer and educator working at the intersection of wine, luxury and place.

From Mendoza and based between Spain and Argentina, her work explores how wine creates meaning beyond the bottle — through terroir, sensory identity and cultural positioning.

She contributes to international platforms including Wine-Searcher and Great Wine Capitals, and serves as Ambassador for the International Wine Challenge and The World’s Best Vineyards.

Through her projects Winifera and Winelux, she approaches wine as both a sensory and narrative experience — advising wineries, hospitality groups and luxury brands across Europe and Latin America.

Beyond strategy and writing, María Laura is an active presence in the global wine community: she judges at international competitions across multiple continents, lectures and trains wine professionals in Europe, the Americas and Asia-Pacific, and has designed and led elite sommelier education programmes for some of the world’s leading wine organisations.

A member of the Guild of Food Writers, she brings a distinctly Latin American perspective to global wine conversations.” #newmember #wineed #congratulations @abvtastings @linda.simpson.35513 @thelarderat36 @jesshw_wine @marialauraortizchiavetta @andrea.warren.14 @ninacerullo @chvinovation @winelux_businessinsider
Introducing our newest member to the AWE. Congratu Introducing our newest member to the AWE. Congratulations Felix. In his own words……“Felix began his professional life as a chartered accountant, and spending some years in financial services before an unexpected passion took hold during the COVID-19 lockdown: wine.

What started as curiosity soon became serious commitment. He pursued formal qualifications, earning the WSET Diploma (DipWSET) as well as certified WSET educator. Today, he teaches Levels 1–3 wine courses, guiding students through the fundamentals and finer points of wine with equal enthusiasm.

Beyond the classroom, Felix hosts private tastings for groups — crafting accessible, engaging experiences that make wine approachable for all kinds of audiences.

His interests extend well beyond the vine. Alongside his wine credentials, he holds the JSA Sake Diploma International, WSET Level 3 in Sake, the Shochu Advisor qualification. He has a keen appreciation for spirits too, with particular fondness for Baijiu, Shochu, Gin, and Armagnac, and has served as a judge at the International Spirits Competition, the World Spirits Award, and a number of other competitions.” #wineeducator #wine #congratulations @linda.simpson.35513 @abvtastings @brit_sake_assoc @thelarderat36 @felix.ko1
We would like to welcome new member of the AWE! Mi We would like to welcome new member of the AWE! Mimi Avery.
Mimi has experienced a wonderful wine heritage of growing up with Ronald and John Avery. Mimi says “unfortunately I didn’t have that blessing of their palate memory, unlike my brother Richard – but never the less I have had the extraordinary good fortune to have been in and around the wine trade all my working life. The last recession put paid to a more fiscally lucrative job as a civil engineer – but you can’t beat the work life balance in wine. Especially now that I just spend my life planning and talking about the drops of the gods!”

I was invited in to the AWE after a tutored tasting to a wine club of 40 people about Australia and the links between the countries success and the pioneering of the regions by my father. Having been a buyer for 6 years I also have specific knowledge of a range of smaller regions and countries – which has been such fun.

Welcome Mimi we are thrilled to have you as a member.

A warm welcome to new member Dario Barbato. In his A warm welcome to new member Dario Barbato. In his own words:
My passion for wine began behind a bar in Italy, where I discovered its connection to culture, history, and hospitality. That early curiosity grew into a lifelong pursuit, leading me to the WSET Diploma, WSET Educator certification, and work as an international wine judge. I’ve since developed wine programs across the UK, US, and Middle East, navigating varied regulations, consumer expectations, and cultural contexts.

Combining formal training with hands-on experience, I bring expertise in viticulture, winemaking, and global markets, grounded in a hospitality approach that values clarity, storytelling, and guest engagement. As an educator, I focus on making wine knowledge accessible and practical; as a judge, I sharpen my analytical palate to build balanced, diverse, and commercially effective wine lists.

Driven by innovation, sustainability, and inclusivity, I connect education with strategy to help audiences worldwide appreciate wine’s complexity while adapting to emerging trends—from low-alcohol styles to digital platforms and boutique producers. @dariobarbato

As we continue the posts on our hard working Counc As we continue the posts on our hard working Council Members striving to improve members experiences and opportunities please let me@re introduce @richard.lane.7758
Richard joint Council in 2023 to take forward AWE’s plans for Continuing Professional Development (CPD). The first step was to crystallise members’ needs in the area of CPD, which has led to an at least quarterly programme of events where we ask experts (including our own members) to highlight the latest developments in the wine regions that most of us teach. We have welcomed winemakers from South Australia and South Africa’s Cape South Coast, with our own colleagues giving us invaluable insights into regions including Valpolicella, Alsace, and the Southern Rhone. Heads up for a new-wave Rioja focus this autumn. Thank you Richard for all you do for us 🙌#cpd #wineeducation #wineeducators
